CHRISTMAS CASTLE AND SHOPPING DAY!

9:15  Our guide gives a short driving tour of Brownsville showing the, first iron metal arch bridge in the United States, called Dunlap's Creek Bridge.  It was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, constructed from 1836 to 1839 on the National Road and remains in use today. We see Fiddles Diner, an iconic Water Street eatery in Brownsville which has served the local community for over 100 years, establishing itself as a historic local staple and a filming location.  This area has served as the location for city sets in the movie about Milton Hershey and his wife, Catherine, of the famous Pennsylvania Hershey Chocolate Company.

9:45-11:30 AM Nemacolin Castle:  The 3rd oldest castle in the United States, this location has a charming history dating back to the Native American days.  There are steps in this visit. If visiting near the holidays, this beautiful historic place is adorned with beautiful decorations to delight her visitors. Near Halloween, you may see a few goblins instead.

11:30-12:00 PM We travel along the historically known National Road or Cumberland Road, which was the first Federally funded interstate highway, authorized in 1806 to connect the Potomac River to the Ohio River. Built between 1811 and 1834, this 90-mile segment in southwestern Pennsylvania served as a vital, "Main Street of America" route for westward expansion.  Our guide points out historic buildings all along the way to our next destination.  Featured are diners and taverns new and old and the original toll house used in the 1800’s to fund maintenance of the new National Road. As we enter Uniontown, JV Thompson Mansion is seen from the road.
